Because it seems as if it used to be a secret - he mentioned it being so in my memory as late as the 90s - but then in Busiek's run on UNTOLD TALES he mentions it in a public fight. This has been inconsistently treated going all the way back to Stan’s days.
So in theory, it’s a secret, in that it’s not something that he advertises. Except for all of the times where he advertises it by talking about it publicly.
